The James J. and Mary Edith Rhoades Foundation

The James J. and Mary Edith Rhoades Foundation is an independent, private non-profit foundation incorporated on October 20, 2008. The foundation promotes education, giving, and community involvement. The foundation was initially funded by donations in memory of Senator James J. Rhoades, who served 28-consecutive years for the 29th District of the Pennsylvania Senate before he was unexpectedly killed in an automobile accident.
The James J. and Mary Edith Rhoades Foundation announces that the foundation will receive applications for its first annual scholarship competition. The competition invites students from Schuylkill County who will be attending an institution of higher learning (2 or 4-year college, community college, trade school, business school or equivalent higher education institution) and who show a commitment to education, citizenship and/or community.
To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Schuylkill County and enrolled (or soon-to-be enrolled) in an institution of higher education (as described above.)

The James J. and Mary Edith Rhoades Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee will study the applications, make the award and notify the successful applicant as soon as possible. Proof of enrollment to an institution of higher education must be provided before receipt of scholarship award.
This year is the commencement for The James J. and Mary Edith Rhoades Foundation Scholarship; The scholarship awards for 2010 will be $2,000 to each of three (3) qualifying students. The scholarships will be awarded by June 1, 2010.

Who Can Apply: Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:
• Resident of Schuylkill County;
• Current high-school or vocational student in Schuylkill County graduating in 2010;
• Attending an institution of higher education next year. (Institutions of higher education include two- or four-year college or university, community college, business or trade school; Attendance may be part- or full-time.)

How to Apply: Complete attached application form and submit completed application and essay to The James J. and Mary Edith Rhoades Foundation by April 22, 2010.

Qualifying Criteria: Based on applicants commitment to education, citizenship and/or community as follows:
• Education—Acknowledges the important of education as a valuable and vital tool for an individual’s success. Exemplifies positive use and appreciation of education and plans to utilize educational opportunities in the future.

• Citizenship—Possesses a positive response to being a member of his or her community. Embraces a sense of community and giving to others in actions and nature.

• Community Participation/Outlook—Exemplifies volunteerism and community involvement in the past and plans of participation in community activities in the future.

Scholarship Awards: $2,000 cash scholarships to three (3) qualifying students. Winners will be announced June 1, 2010.

PenSPRA Scholarships Available

PenSPRA Scholarships Available

The Pennsylvania School Public Relations Association (PenSPRA) is once again holding its annual college scholarship contest. Scholarships will be awarded to six high school seniors who plan to attend college and study a communications related field (i.e. journalism, English, public relations, advertising, graphic arts, etc.).
